Wanman

One month has passed by very quickly. I guess the work load is huge but I have passion So it makes it easy from me. Although I have been working late  nights, I still enjoy the  work.

Fabulous team to work with. Rewarding with good product allowance. Most of all the never ending challenges that keeps me going.

It will keep on getting better, I reckon.

Perswik

I reckon I survived well this week fairly. Ended a good Friday with my new colleagues with whatelse but beer.

I learnt a thing or two about HFM. I survived a busy monthend week too. More stabilisation to come next week but I reckon I am capable.

I do like the role. Something that has its own challenges. Ever changing environment. But come to think of it. Me is my own worst enemy. So I do everything at the best of my ability and seek constant feedback. Stay organised. All else will follow.

Will have to put that level of perfection jn a cupboard and be vulnerable. And all woll work well..

Persdi

Is it me, the idea of first day or me being perfectionist that I ought to learn things quickly but failed to on the first day?

Perhaps I should give myself the benefiy of the firsy day. There are limitations on day one like access on all resources I reckon. But my goals is to get a little bit comfortable with my new role this week. So I got til Friday..

I journey again on the train albeit a short one but I do love my trains..

Lonesome Me

A great wave of depression just hit me. I was longing and it didn't happen. It shot me and it was sharp as a sword. Lord, help me as I go through this harsh reality. that I might find what I am looking for. I don't ask much. Just simple sense of belonging.

... to new beginnings!

Many times I go back to my blog just to find out at what particular date things happen. For documentary purposes, this is the time I left Potts Point and moved to Ashfield. I was staying with Roi for more than a month since I returned in Sydney. Million thanks to him. I have 2 great friends who would always help me through thick and thin. The other one is Niko, he lives in Melbourne now.

Anyway, I decided to move out with a sole purpose of getting back on my feet as quickly as I can. If I pay my rent. I know my funds will deplete and it will drive me to get a job quicker. Rather than sleeping all day, watching tons of Netflix. I thought that this is for the best. Besides, I can see the calories building up in my waistline and having my double chin back!

So I moved. I live with Peter. He is single 55 years of age has a knee problem. But it makes no difference to me as he is very kind. I met him Tuesday and decided to move after three days.

Luckily I got a good news shortly after moving in. I received an offer of employment with a mining company. It was a battle against well known food and beverage giant. I tried to stall the former so the pressure is on for the latter to give me an offer before COB today. They actually did. It was verbal subject to background check. I accepted Lion of course. Other companies are also aggressive like Electrolux, GoGet, etc. I guess its my lucky week.

Why did I choose Lion? Plain and simple. It is where I belong. I speak their culture. I live and breathe changes, innovation. Being agile. Continuous improvement. and of course, I love beer! and I am an advocate for sociability. Something I learnt recently from my world travel.

So, lets drink to new beginnings, which has been my mantra when coupled with self-doubt or despair.

back to reality...

Arriving in Sydney again after such a long break feels like a flashback in 2006 when I first arrived in Australia. But this time I know that I am wiser, I am stronger and capable of facing anything. Life is meant to be lived carrying our past mistakes and knowing what to do if it happens to you again. I know better what to do this time around. I just have this zeal, that I'm off to a fresh start.

My good friend, Charlton offered to pick me up from the airport. It was such a good offer that I can never say no to. Imagine 3 suitcases and 2 bags. Perfect timing to return cos its my favourite season, Spring. Brings hope and the weather is just perfect.

Charlton and Tin dropped me off at Potts Point. Roi and Jay were waiting for me and we had lunch at an Italian place not far from their apartment.

Few days after I went for a job interview at Acco Brands. It's an office supplies company and its based in King's Park. Farther by one station after Blacktown. Ideally I am not really choosy but this one is really not my type of location I would want to work in. But still I did my best. Brushed up my interview skills. But never heard back from them.

As I am writing this, in handsight - there will be a lot more interviews to come. Maybe after the fourth interview. My ability to carry and sell myself in an interview would show. It is the balance of being confident, precise and sense of humour that is not to overly done but shows of a side that is my charismatic personality. That eventually will happen in 5-7 weeks after this date. 1-4 weeks was a struggle but the glory days will be reaped between 6-8 weeks.

Finding a job can be daunting. But with patience and resilience. It can be quite exciting especially if you are after your career growth and is very receptive to change.

RTW #10 Japan

My short Japan trip has to be in the itinerary of my Round The World tour. Just because, this is my favourite country. Tokyo is my favourite city. I met my friend Mar in Shinjuku. Strolled the night in Harajuku and Shibuya. We had Okonomiyaki and Tokoyaki that satisfied our food cravings. But most shops are closed in Omotesando. And Mar seems not to enjoy Harajuku. I feel bad if someone didn't appreciate where I am bringing them. And even the next day when we went to Yoyogi Park, we just went to the entrance and then we just went back and hit the shops in Akahibara. He liked shopping, I supposed that's that.

At night I enjoyed a long steamy Onsen at the hotel. It is one of the reasons I love Japan. You just soak yourself and forget all the troubles. Let the heat melt them down until you feel all the pain in your body and soul disappear.

Shibuya and Shinjuku will always be my favourite places to go here. Because its crazy. City never sleeps. And the atmosphere spells FUN.

Then the next day is something to look forward to. I have my A350 premium economy with SQ from HND to SIN. Not too bad. I would not buy this product because I would want the undivided attention. So its either full economy for me or business. Not somewhere in the middle.

SIN-SYD was a fabulous treat. A380 business class. I needed that. Good things must come to an end. It is the final cap of my world tour and what's best but to toast with a champagne as I return back home in Sydney travelling in style.

RTW #9 Taiwan

PEY Upgrade from BR
I got upgraded to Premium Economy and this is my first flight with Eva Air. I scrapped my MNL-HKG-TPE with Cathay Pacific, just because it doesn't jive with my 55kg baggage. Star Alliance gold has its perks for additional baggage. So that's that. More room for my happy feet.

Taipei and the missing Vendome Hotel
First I shall say that the transport system in Taiwan is so awesome. But finding my hotel is really frustrating because normally I stayed in Airbnb for my world tour but this is one of them cities that I decided to book a hotel. Then I realised Vendome Hotel is not like you're typical Sofitel, Shangri-la. It is hiding in a huge building and it occupies levels 11 and 12. So that's why I couldn't find it.

Location was perfect. Starbucks at the lobby next to Zara. Uniqlo is around the corner too. Shops close late at night. Taiwanese chicken popcorn just next to Starbucks. Just perfect.

Hazel Erika's Arrival
My cousin arrived 2am that night. And she was so tired from the trip. She ended up reaching the hotel 4am. I told her not to sleep. Otherwise she will miss one whole day of fun.

The Manic Itinerary
We went to a famous old buddhist temple, Lungshan. Then we realise how hot it is in Taipei. I wish we had an umbrella. But we ended up catching the train all the time. We went to shopping place similar to Shinjuku. The place is called Ximen. We ate a weird bread stick and washed it away with Taiwanese milk tea, tasted like Gong-cha. Then we took a bus to go to the famous Changkai-Shek memorial. Walked through the park and saw Taipei 101. We finally walked to Sun-yat Sen memorial and there we saw Taipei 101 with a nice picturesque view.

We went home because my cousin can feel exhausting creeping in. I told her my batteries are still good. So I went for walk to another temple called Hsing Tian Kong. It was a very quick visit. The water cups they have are literally pieces of folder paper that you shape into a cone then pour water. How cool was that? Then I took a bus and missing my stop, I went all the way to Jiantanshan Park. But its good, the garden was really mesmerizing. But the walk to Martyrs' Shrine took most of the time. Before I know it, it was already closed. So then for my final stop, I went to Shilin Market. It was really nice. I wish I have my cousin with me but she was still busy with her beauty sleep.

She woke up when I was about to return. So I told her to meet her Taiwanese friends and enjoy the rest of the night. I was about to rest anyway and do some quick shopping in the area.

Rain and Fog up in the mountains
The next day's itinerary was about exploring the mountain region of Yangmingshan area. We went to the park through bus and uber. Later realising how massive the park is. It reminded me of Lake Kawaguchiko the way it was setup. We walked through the Erzipping trail. It was all the same for the next 30 minutes. While walking, it was perfect time to talk about our family concerns. Open up every issue we had with the Bonuses. Then we just realised how we are unbreakable and we attested to our closeness and nothing shall make it falter. Reaching the end of the trail, it was a very beautiful garden with pond and scenic view like in the movies. Very authentic Taiwanese rural setting even with the fog. I just realise how beautiful it could have been should it had been a clear nice day.

We then went to Beitou after that and had a more relaxing time in the hot springs. I forgot the time and my cousin paged me for crying out loud. It was past 3 in the afternoon and we haven't had lunch yet. We order heaps of Xiao Long Bao and some fried dumpings. Washed away by Hazel's bitter tea and my awesome Taiwan beer.

Final stop is Maokong
The sun is still hiding even though it was my last day. Hazel is not my lucky charm. It was raining still but not to windy that we were able to ride cable car to Maokong. We walked for so long in search of temples and my ultimate goal was to find the Pothole. Erika was furious, because we descended hundreds of steps from top of the mountain to find that bloody pothole. And after awhile, we found it. She cooled a bit and was happy to see the Maokong Pothole too. The view back to the paved road is interesting. So many nice little falls, I call it little iguacu. And beautiful landscape of rural Taiwan.

Taipei 101
At night we visited Taipei 101, because we were in search of a nice shopping mall. This was to luxurious though. All the brands you can think of is here. Upscale but we found the basement grocery store so we got our cheap Taiwan chocolates and of course, Pineapple cake for our family and friends back home.

Laurel Class and ANA Business Class
I went ahead and left my cousin enjoying Taipei for couple of hours. I think she met with her friends so I am not feeling guilty. It is hard when you can't offer lounge access to your relative. So I went ahead and enjoyed my pampered treatment at the EVA lounge. This is one is extra special because of the unlimited Movenpick.

Laurel class was really really nice. I like EVA Air's hard product. ANA on the other hand is good too. I remember my first time with ANA I was bumped to business. And its on Dreamliner so it is extra special. I slept like a baby the whole time and it means I have more energy when I arrive in Tokyo after 6 long hours.

RTW #8 Canada

Late arrival
Perhaps it was not the best idea to take the bus from New York to Toronto. But still, I can't be bothered getting visa for just two days stay in Canada. I learnt that entering by land doesn't require any kind of permit. Anyway, blame it on the late departure of Greyhound from Buffalo, half an hour wait in Niagara Falls plus the rush hour traffic. I arrived a little late past eight in the evening.

I met with my cousin's best mate from uni, Ralph. I asked if we could eat in any modern Canadian cuisine so we went to XXX. It was really nice. But a bit expensive. Come to think of it, we are in Canada and perhaps I should adjust my expectations. But still for $50 meal, I reckon it was expensive.

We had a nice chat. Tried to look for common things that we know about my cousin, Fatima. We did realise that she's weird but fun! There is something in me that thinks he is not as warm as I expected him to be. But all that changed after he went to all the trouble going to my booked Airbnb and carrying my bag too.

Unusual Airbnb
I arrived rather unexpectedly in the apartment surprised that everyone was outside the premises. There are firemen everywhere but we were told it was a false alarm. The keys were properly placed in the fire exit water hose and I find it easy to checkin. There were heaps of instructions from my host, Daryl. I never met him but it seems he is everywhere in the apartment. So many rules like you cant eat in the room, no walking barefeet, don't touch the kitchen, and dont get me started on the toilet rules.

Anyway in all honesty i found him to be rather rude. Or maybe because something happened to him before. Later I realise he is deaf that maybe is the reason that he was taken advantage of. But respect the rules and you're good to go. When in Rome... as they say.

Halloween in Toronto
I went for a night stroll in Toronto. Desperately following the yellow brick road leading to the overrated Toronto CN Tower. And I did. Later realising that I am dead tired. I just needed to have my grocery samples. Something maple. Some fruity chocolates. And that's it. However, to my horror there were so many homeless people. Shouting. Very scary. Suspicious looking people really. I felt like they are zombies because its too dark in the streets. And I've never felt scared in my life. I walked briskly and slept like a log knowing I survived the horror.

Air Canada 77W in C
My salvation in Canada is being pampered in business class in Boeing 777-300ER of Air Canada. I just love Star Alliance. It definitely exceeded my expectation. It is the best North American airlines in the alliance. Of course, United is the other one so every other airline would be the best!

I had a very nice waffle in cranberry-apple compote drizzled with maple syrup and sausages. I really like it. I slept for a bit. Between Toronto to Vancouver was like 4-5 hours from recollection. It's like Sydney to Perth. Then my arrival to Vancouver was all good. I deposited my bags in left luggage and I was good to go.

Sunny Vancouver
Vancouver greeted me with a warm sun. It was just nice weather all throughout my stay. Partner it with scenic mountainous view. Nice breeze from the ocean. Splash of the waves from distant shores. Boats and Yachts sailing across a perfect day. And my taste of Pacific Salmon and chips for lunch. It was just perfect. I realise then that I can definitely live here.

Wings, Footy & a mate
When I got tired of walking and I can see that my complexion started to darken. Damn, I forgot to put on sunblock. I stopped by Starbucks to re-hydrate, charge my phone and I meet Hendrick, the Filo barista. He was really friendly and we talked about the struggles of staying overseas. The tricks you learn being in a foreign land. And eventually fitting in to the culture that is so western. We went for beer and free wings while watching footy Argentina vs Portugal. So many South Americans watching and they are quite passionate.

Hendrick went with me to take photos of the quay near Science World. Relaxed and talked more about life, rebellion and its resolution. He is now a changed man and wants to do better. Study and work and save. Aren't we all, at some point? Oh well, he is a kid maturing to be a man imho.

I rushed to the other side towards Sunset beach. I walked briskly. And I did catch it. It was so beautiful. At night time I went to the marina and enjoy the view even better.

I went back to my Airbnb and slept good. By the way, my host is from Iraq. His name is Simon and he owns a lot of birds.... they live inside the house. Go figure!

RTW #7 USA

Stranded in the middle of the bridge en route to New Jersey
Meeting the family is one of the reason why I returned to the US. I initially planned on exploring Central America like Panama or see more cities in Canada but knowing that I have not seen my relatives in US since 2012, five years is a long time so I did have a reason to see them again. Plus I wanted to see my new nephew, Julien.

My mistake was to book the wrong airport, JFK instead of EWR, knowing that my first stop is NJ. So it suits me right to go ride a transit airport bus that later I realised doesn't go directly to EWR but will change over at Grand Central. How do I know? I was so frustrated that I ended up seated in a packed bus. My italian seat mate can't pay the fare too cos he only have euros. I have to be a good samaritan and change is euro to dollars. Later he helped me use his phone's wifi. Hence, its always good to help. You wont know you needed them eventually.

So what happened was I have my Vodafone sim lost somewhere in Kenya when I changed to Airtel. I asked the helped of my friend, Roi to request for another Voda sim and send it to my cousin in NJ. So at this point I havent met my cousin so I don't have any means of communicating to them.

But in NYC everywhere there is wifi. So I was wifi hopping. I was constantly updating my cousin of my whereabouts so she can plan when to leave office and pick me up at EWR airport.

Then the most horrendous thing happened, the bus' lower right tire exploded and we were stranded in the freeway in the middle of the bridge. After few minutes only five unlucky ones were left in the bus. Others who have departing flights were the priority. So for us who just arrived, we had to wait. Police came over and said that we were unsafe outside the bus so we had to stay inside. My fellow unlucky ones were old couples from US and UK. I offered them some biscuits from Colombia but they all declined except for an old chap from UK. He loved it. Oh, my italian seatmate was here as well. Maybe he was sticking with me as we share the same sentiment of just arriving in the US and how I shared my fascination of Italy. He is from Florence, and I told him how I adored it. After 30 long minutes our bus replacement arrived. I also used his wifi until I contacted my cousin.

The beautiful town of Westfield, New Jersey
My cousin drove my aunt's car and at I sat at the back trying to familiarise myself with my nephew Julien. He's so quiet and I think he hates me. He just stares and throws his toys everywhere. But when we went to Gap to buy him some sweater cos its started to get chilly, he threw tantrums. I felt bad cos I was the one who chose the elephant sweater and he hated it. We had restaurant in an italian place and soon after Julien's true personality appeared. He is so playfully that you actually get exhausted. We played hide and seek. Read him his favourite books. My aunt cooked brekkie and the rest is just relaxed vacation. It was good cos I had my little pause. A needed one before I storm the streets of New York the next day.

Good 'ol New York
How I love this city? It rained so hard on the only day I was there but it didn't stop me from going through to my plans. Simple though, I just needed to see the new World Trade Center and Oculus. Then walk in the High Line. And enjoy night at Times Square. I did all that. But with soaked socks as I continuously lost any umbrella I buy. First I forgot in the subway. Finally, I dropped somewhere. Maybe over at Dunkin' Donuts. I did have time to see my relatives who lives in Queens. They treat me to a Filo dinner, same place I was 5 years ago.  I bet they didn't know we ate here before. But still I was here to see them.

Times Square is not complete if you don't go the chocolate shops around. I bought my Hershey's and Reese's. Then went to Walmart to buy more chocolates! Finally when I bought everything I needed at I love NY store. I headed to Chelsea, and slept. I bet I was snoring oh so loudly.

12 Hour Bus Ride
The ride from Manhattan to Toronto was so tiresome. I only sat in my seat but 12 hours is really long come to think of it. Especially if its at daytime. Where you see a perfect day but you just spent yours sitting in a bus and waiting for the destination.

All in all, US was quite short. But enough to see my relatives. Enough to recall my first time in NYC hating the subway. But loving every moment of how fast paced everything is. The city that never sleeps is for me. I have strong coffee and life full of zest to keep me awake anyway.

RTW #6 Mexico

Unwelcoming Mexican Immigration
Arriving in Cancun, it wasn't as hospitable as I was expecting it. I just been to Brazil and Colombia, so I was thinking maybe Mexicans area really nice. But my first impression was a disaster. Immigration held me up for questioning why I am going to Mexico and being Australian and not holding another local ID for them was an anomaly. And being born in Philippines raised questions why I am travelling the world. It was really frustrating. Later I realised that the reason the immigration officer was so hard on me, is that she wanted to know how I was naturalised and perhaps she was looking after her personal interest in obtaining a foreign citizenship. Then, I rest my case..

Too Unsettling, Restless in Cancun
Perhaps after the grueling experience with immigration I was too exhausted and I didn't even mind the currency conversion the lady gave me. Luckily, my Colombian friend from the plane helped me get a best deal. The Mexican lady apparently gave me really bad rate and was taking the opportunity because I look like I really didn't care. When we exited the airport, a rush of steamy humid hot temperature took its place and I was sweating profusely. To add to the horror, my airport transfer is nowhere in sight. I went back inside and said my goodbye's to Mauricio and thank him again for being there when I need help. He still insisted on seeing me to my accommodation but I respectfully declined and told him he needed to meet his friends, as I am sure they are waiting.

I had to ring up the hotel and send someone in to pick me up. It is so near yet so far. The ride is like 6 minutes but the route is crazy at night that it is impossible to walk it of given the heat. Once I arrived, I saw nearby service station with Burger King and Subway, which would be my official food for my one-day stay in Mexico. I have to go back maybe in MXN just to have my authentic tacos, burrito, quesadilla and the like. Anyway, I only slept 3 hours and paying for full service hotel. It was such a waste. The tour driver picked me up at 4am and I had 5 minutes to rush pack my things, checkout. Without taking a bath. To think it is too humid during the day. This is not a vacation but more of survival.

Chichen Itza and the Mayan Ruins
Our driver had to go to an official Chichen Itza tours and transfer everyone to a bigger bus. By the time we got everyone, it was already 6 in the morning. We drove for 2-3 hours and the best thing here is that we were the first ones to arrive. I went running to the bathroom to do my morning routine so at least I am comfy when I start the tour. But still, humidity peaks as it went to noon. I was so exhausted in the sweltering heat. It was such a bad idea that I did not take shower the night before. I should have!!! I felt uneasy but luckiliy it didn't show on the pic. Who can smell me in photos, right? Poor Holland girl sitting next to me, I hope I don't stink.

The tour comes with an english speaking guide. I did listen to most of the stories how Chichen Itza was used to tell Mayans about the time, date, rituals they do. Their beliefs are all incorporated in the ruins we saw. It is so mesmerizing how astronomy plays such an excellent role in all aspects of Mayan lifestyle. When they do harvest... They believe in various gods, fertile harvest, sun god, war, etc. At some point I had to split out from the group. It was too sunny and humid. I have to seek shelter in the shade. The pace was so slow that I felt bit bored. So I did my own tour and was able to see a lot of places. And also to charge my phone.

If only I stayed in Cancun longer..
Overall, I think that it is best if you drive in Cancun. So you can maximise what you want to see. An hour in Chichen Itza should be enough. Then you can go to Tulum for another hour. And the rest should be spent in the beautiful beaches. So many to see. The night life is another thing! I wish I could have done that.

I talked to my tour driver and sat in front of the van. I asked him if he can take me to the beach. Later, it was like he was touring me privately together with his two kids. His name is Alberto Jose. He was really happy to show me around. He gave me 10 minutes to feel the beach sand and take photos of the famous sign where it says 'Cancun'. It is called 'Playa Delfines'. I thought I can stay longer but I worked out that it would be tough to get public transport given that it is Sunday so I decided to just kill time in the Airport. In a comfort of a lounge. And by the way I got my business class upgrade so I stayed there and took my deserved shower! Finally.

RTW #5 Colombia

Uber Trouble and the friendly Cabbie
Soon as I reach Bogota airport I immediately bought my simcard, Claro. Everything here is hypo-inflationary meaning you spend thousands of pesos but it's just tens of dollars really. Then I booked my uber. Knowing that fury between uber and airport cabs, I reckon I need to walk a bit further down the road and book my uber ride from there. I was waiting forever and my tolerance is just 30 minutes. But the car I booked is not really moving. Seems to be stuck in the entrance of the airport. So naturally, I did have to go to his location. Leaving one or two messages in Spanish telling him to wait for me where he is currently at. I did go to his location only to find that he doesn't exist. I can't really cancel because of the hefty cancellation charge. So I just keep on looking. Until my tolerance was reached. I was an hour in the airport carrying my heavy baggage for crying out loud. I decided just to get the nearest cab.

The cab driver I got is really friendly and he seems not hungry for money. His name is Tony. He made sure I trusted him telling me I can either pay fixed price or he can open the meter so I know that the price I pay is reasonable. Apparently, the meter is measured by taxi units multiplied by the rate. Because I would have a heart attack if I have to pay what's on the meter. Anyway, I showed him my address. The trouble is that I was so engaged with the conversation about Colombian culture that I did not double check where we are heading. Tony inadvertently mixed up the unit number to the Town. It was supposed to be unit 201, calle 71 but he thought iwas calle 201. So we went super up north and realised when we are almost there. Poor Tony, he was so stressed and he was worried about how I would react with disappointment. Eventually, I said he wouldn't have to worry much cause I already told my Airbnb host what happened so they don't worry why it took me more than an hour to reach the place. Cut long story short, we reached the place after more than an hour. Compounded by city traffic. Tony got me coke (not the narcotics) for refreshment and we bonded more about my travels and what Colombia can offer. He was surprised I only stay in Bogota for a day. There are heaps to see in Colombia including other cities like Cartagena. Anyway, I felt for him that he was so exhausted so I paid whatever is on the meter and few more for his kindness.

Walking around Bogota
First day, I wanted a free spirited wanderlust experience. So I just want to the Park and wandered around the many shops. I was enamored by wealth of flora and how distinct they are. I walked through to something like a food festival only to find they were already closing. So I just got myself some local empanadas to fill my stomach. I walked so much that later I decided I need to go to a spa just to freshen me up. My feet aches and I was totally exhausted. I met this friendly guy and offered to have pizza with me. Its always good to get know a local. He paid for my pizza and I paid for coffee afterwards. His name is Daniel. In just a matter of minutes we were talking about our families and life away from them. He tells me his problems and his goals and ideals. Later, we went our separate ways but he did offer to go with me the next day to La Candelaria. I took his offer knowing it is better to go with someone local and a friend who can be my translator too. Not that he knows good english but at least he can explain the sights.

La Candelaria with Daniel
This was perhaps the highlight of my one day stay in Bogota. Luckily, Daniel was there when local police starts to question me. Apparently all I have to say is 'si' and show them my ID. Then off we go. I have to admit I was bit scared. I can't imagine being detained especially if I am foreign to their language and rules. I don't even know where is our consul here in Bogota. La Candelaria took my breath away, it was so authentic and so ancient that reminded me so much of 'Narcos'. Thanks to Netflix for bringing a sense of Colombia prior to my visit and I got to appreciate it more. It was massive area and every walk is picturesque. I got so many pictures together with my good friend. He was even nice to gypsies. But sometimes being too nice can be exploited. He ended up giving his watch and 10,000 pesos, I do have to lent him. Poor Daniel but I thought I had to help a friend. And for what's it worth the money is nothing compared to all the help and guidance he gave me while I am here in Bogota.

Last chance to try local food
It was really frustrating that I never ate anything local that identifies as Colombian. I did have my last chance to try it in the airport. So I did. Its called 'Bandeja Paisa', which is a mixture of everything really weird. Beans, Pork Crackles, Sausage, Banana, Egg, etc. I liked it because I like weird. I spent my last Colombian pesos just to have it together with a massive strawberry milkshake. People are looking at my food. It is so huge and expensive. I overheard someone saying that it costs a fortune and they were constantly looking at me when I was eating it. I didn't care and I devoured every bit of it and they can stare all they want but it was a treat to myself.

Avianca and another new Colombian friend
I bid goodbye to Bogota. I was seated on a window seat next to a young professional handsomely dressed. I never attempted to talk to him because my Spanish is really bad. But when he helped me in getting the drink from the flight attendant I said thanks and he started small talk ... and its in English. So apparently, he is on his way to Cancun to go to Acapulco to meet his friends who invited him for a long weekend escape. He was so friendly and there is something about Colombian that makes the conversation easy even with the language barrier. It sounds ironic really. I talk to him in broken Spanish most of the time but he tries his best to talk in English but eventually have to use translator to express what he meant. But it was pleasant conversation. We talked a lot about travelling. Working in Bogota. He also currently taking university. His name is Mauricio and later after my arrival in Mexico he would help me in making sure I get the best currency exchange.

I find that all Colombians are genuinely friendly and that friendship can last for a long time. I do communicate with them even after I left Bogota. They go an extra mile to get to know you as a person. Share differences in culture and appreciate similarities. They are honest and warm. Often I look for places to see, the food the country has to offer, the differences in culture. But the hospitality of a country goes a long way. I would definitely visit Colombia again and I have a reason to meet my new found friends. It something I never expected but gives a lot of smile in my heart.

RTW #4 Brazil

Sao Paulo and the rain
The rain greeted us all day long as we took the sanctuary of our house stay with Mamma Lou. She's so accommodating and though it is hard to speak with her due to the language barrier. Our first day not being to converse in portuguese was indeed a struggle.

The cold has settled in our nerves that my brother started to get sick. But I'm tough as a horse so I didn't get sick. Going to grocery without internet is a struggle as we do not know exactly where to go, what to expect. But sometimes common sense works better without the dependency on internet.

The conversion is killing us too. because everything in Brazil is expensive. Coming from Philippines, Indonesia, India and Kenya. This is a major uplift in our budget. I did account for it but my brother converts every single thing and ends up not buying much. Oh well! At least he did have some organic savings that he can use later one when I leave him here. LOL

Raining profusely so all we can do is to manage our time and figure out where to go in lieu of Rio de Janiero. Yes, we did have to collectively decide about not going. First, we hired a car and we think that the road is unsafe and parking is out of the question knowing how massively chaotic it is in Rio. Second, as mentioned chaos resulting from unpaid local police to keep the order. Finally, drugs everywhere and violence is a result. News about tourist being killed has stamped the final decision not to go.

As an alternative, a friend I met on the plane to Sao Paulo messaged me and said that Florianopolis is a nice place. And so we did...

Mamma Lou and the housemates
During our long stay with Mamma Lou (the Airbnb host), we met a lot of locals staying with her. First can I just say how beautiful the place of Mamma Lou is. And how she is like a warm-hearted mother who takes care of her young children. That's how we are treated here. Plus the location is super safe and nice neighbourhood over the hill. She makes us really really great good strong coffee and she takes gives us medicine. Me my sprain and my brother for his super headache.

I met Marcel who stays in the house every week except for weekends. He is on sumkinda secondment as he come from farther place in the outskirts of SP. Then this is the super cool techy guy, Gustavo with the braces that suits his personality. He is really funny especially when he laughs. Full of enthusiasm and charisma. No wonder he excels at his work. He come from beautiful beachside city somewhere in the west of Brazil, different state that is. And finally a girl I should call Francesca (something like that, or at least it suits her beautiful face). She is due to get married soon and her fiance is working somewhere in SP and she is spending time in Airbnb to relax and of course, to shop.

We all blended pretty well and I think everything just fell in to place and we get a bit of the brazilian culture and hospitality that is unparalleled.

Getting connected...
Vivo was the answer and this brought us to places where we wanted to go. From Se Cathedral. Teatro Municipal. to the Shopping Mall. And just anywhere our feet take us. Plus Metro train and bus are so connected. It feels like living in First World country really. Too bad politics and corruption is worse that it slows down the progress of a promising nation.

Checking gndr and you know what I'm talking about. The almost thrilling and what I've been hoping for. But too bad i can't be out and about.  I'm in Brazil for crying out loud! nuff said. Too frustrating. next!

Foz do Iguacu
This is the highlight of Brazil, really. I've never seen something so beautiful and its all natural. I decided to take a helicopter ride after my brother said that I only will be here once. I owe to myself. And I did. The quickest 10 minutes of my life. Everything was just like I am holding my breath for a second and later I want to ask myself if I really did see it. It was the most amazing display of so many falls put together, interconnecting with Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. This is a monster of a falls. The devil's throat is the highlight. The thunderous sound when I got upclose the next day that just brought the drama into a big roar of climax. The experience is just amazing. I was all drenched from the mist, sweat and tears of joy.

Cataratas Iguacu Falls is 1km away from Hotel Colonial where we stayed. It is highly recommended. I would have stayed 2 nights here, only so I can also cross boarder to Argentina and see the other side. I heard its quite a hike and you seen many many falls too. But Brazil has the best panoramic experience compared to Argentina's real feel with the falls.

Floripa and all its beautiful good people
We stayed here for a full 4 days. It wasn't too much but given that it was raining, at least we did get a chance of getting a day with the fullness of the sun. It was well spent. We went to the beautiful pristine beach. Tried lots of local food. From acai, to which I am now addicted. I loved tapioca as a toppings too. And of course the super sweet Brigadiero. Finally, the meat. Churrasco. who would say no?!

The best time in Floripa is not just because it was a perfect island escape. But the people. Yes our Airbnb host is just so lovely. Their massive labrador is my best friend, hugs me all the time. The small terrier is friendly too but he was just too much to handle. Our host, Alessandra was super lovely. She cooked for us. Invited all her friends, neighbour and relatives to meet us. Her boyfriend, Mike is so awesome. He sings for us. Talk to us about the life in Brazil. Our official translator. And he is also our free tour guide. If I have luxury of flying back, will definitely meet with my new family in Brazil. Their hospitality is from the heart. I will cherish it forever! Obrigado.

My last night in Brazil
Finally my last night in Brazil is just to look for the super huge POM-POM snack. Forgot the name but it looks like there is a small blue dog in the label. To look for PACQUITO as well. I love these. If you are in Brazil, I will pay double, triple, whatever it costs to taste these two again!! We spent good enough time in Publico Mercado to look for local treat and take photos of the local town of Floripa.

I recall in Sao Paulo the next day. I did not do much. Just rested and chat with Mamma Lou. He had a new coffee drip machine. Which I want to buy one too. The coffee is just so good in Brazil. I boarded my uber soon and waited at the lounge for my domestic transfer to Rio. I am glad I have the luxury of using my Gold card and fly Avianca.

Later that night, Rio was just so mean to me.. From the super long walk to my "Airport Hotel". To missing brekkie. Overcharging hotel. Sleeping for 2-3 hours. To no YB anywhere except when I walk 10 minutes of the hotel. How ridiculous? Oh well. I felt I was in Rio but who cares. I will see you some other time when you've tamed yourself. Haha.

RTW #3 Kenya

Getting ready for Africa
We initially went home in Manila to unload our soiled clothes and get fresh ones. This time it is hardcore backpacking. It was nice to see mum and the rest of the family again. One day is seriously not enough to recoup for the tired body. On the contrary, we have enriched our souls and we are ready to see yet another side of the world that I am longing to experience, Africa.

Ethiopian Air, Addis Ababa and its cuisine
Prior to our arrival in Kenya, we had a quick stopover at Addis Ababa. Though Ethiopia is in turmoil, I was longing to see this country famed for its tasty cuisine. We did have a chance to taste it as we spent few hours in Ethiopian Air Star Alliance Gold Lounge. It is not as bad as I thought it would be. The reviews were harsh even on the hard product of Ethiopian Air. It was a delight to fly ET's 787 Dreamliner. The only downside is that not everyone would receive blankets given that its a red eye flight. It should have been the right of everyone to have at least one. But it doesn't change my fondness for Ethiopian Air. It truly deserves to be part of *A imho.

Outskirts of Nairobi whilst election polling
The lesson I've learnt on day one is never depend yourself in a review. I reckon some of them are biased because Kenyan family can be accommodating and proud of their city. But in harsh reality, the place we chose is not really in the centre of the city. I consider it lying in the populated lower class outskirts of the city. Even if its in broad day light you can see there were so many wasted locals sitting down the pavement engaging in drugs. At the back of our 'hotel' lies a huge automobile junk shop. It get scarier as darkness crawls...

Presidential election is currently taking place when we were in Manila and just in time when we arrived the polling has started. I was warned of the horrors the result may bring especially knowing that the popular vote goes to the incumbent president seeking to be reelected. The mass locals are not happy about it. I can hear rampage at night and see from the news the chaos it brings. Which mainly brings us to watching a lot of Kenyan soap opera in the tellie. Let me tell you, it is very interesting. The sound is very funky comical and plot is satire. It is really entertaining while nibbling on a local snack I forgot whats it called but it tastes like Bujha Mix (from India).

Africans love their meat. I tried corner chook and it was so tasty and very very cheap. I wanted to try goat but it was out of our budget.

On Saturday, we went to look for simcard and sugar. We got the simcard but only after a huge drama with Airtel. Apparently the best place to get this is through an Airtel outlet but nothing is open until after the election tally is finished. Our seller from the street booth named Sarah helped us by using her name and getting us signed up. We later shouted coffee and snack for her kindness.

We went to church on Sunday and we can catch the earlier mass but its Swahili. And we did. And I didnt regret it. There were lots of dancing. Lots of animal noises. Lots of raising of hands and swaying. It was unique and fun service. And I was responding in Swahili language. While my brother is holding the english translated one, I was enjoying the language.

Masai Mara Safari
I guess this is the highlight of the trip, after five grueling hours of bumpy ride to Masai we arrived in our campsite. There is one camp per group and my brother and I got the Mercanto (sounds-like) I remember it sounded like our surname. Anyway, there was no electricity in the campsite itself but in the centre dining hall, we can only charge our electronic gadgets between 6:30 to 7:30am and 7:30 to 10:00pm. So you guess it right, night is really early here in the middle of nowhere. The first night is not too bad as we managed to mingle with the local tribe of Maasai in a campfire they lit. The elder brother took a hold of my brother's mobile when he was showing a picture. Shortly after half an hour he know my brother's life depicted by his 3,000+ pictures in the gallery. Well, at least it was a conversational starter to compare life in two distinct places in the world.

I learnt that Maasai boys were rewarded with a cow if they do circumcision, pierce their lower lip or ear, etc. And when you offer marriage, you needed to offer the woman's family with at least 10 cows. So it seems that it is their tribal currency. Kenyan Shillings are not legal tender (lol).

All in all, we went to at least 3 game drives to the massive Masai Mara National Park. First thing when we arrived, we went crazy with Zebras and Giraffes. Actually any animals we saw. Especially when we encountered animal carcass. Then shortly after we saw the culprit, who else would it be, the King of the Jungle. Lion. Apparently all the work is done by lioness. The male lion would just be waiting to be served. But in fairness he would be there to defend the family if need arises. This is how Maasai tribe has adapted their way of living. Women works while men tend the sheep and defend their home.

Our tour group is very small. Two friends from Poland and Serbia who are both flight attendants. Our driver is Morris and our cook is George. I come to appreciate it because towards our game drive, we felt like it was a private tour.

The second day is when we saw the rest of the big 5, elephant, buffalo and the elusive black rhino. We unfortunately didn't see leopards but they look like cheetahs so I guess that would count. To top it all up, we saw the lion in the morning as they were hunting for their prey. We see them devour their giraffe brekkie. The badass hayenas were also in action.

Another highlight is the Wildebeast migration from Tanzania. They already passed the famous lake migration but its all good. We saw hundreds of wildebeast running in a orderly fashion queued up with all the discipline they can muster.

Visit to Maasai Village and Upclose and getting personal
On our second night in Masai Mara, we visited the Maasai Tribe's village. This is before sunset. They welcomed us with their welcome dance and later we joined them wearing their shuka's (vivid red robe) as we danced in circle galloping in the rhythm of their voices. It was surreal experience as we enter and see how simple their life can be. The whole family (4-6 pax) would be sleeping in a very small dark hut where they can still spare 1-2 guests in another small bed. The light is natural as they do not use electricity. They produce fire based on the friction they created from spinning stick to a wood. They built fences to ensure no wild animals go run into their small village and endanger their herd of sheep. They all have smiles on their faces and are very welcoming. In the end, we did purchase some unique memento to support the welfare of the tribe. I got a zebra designed black stone necklace while my brother got the more expensive lion tooth necklace.

Finally, I challenged the Prince of Maasai with a 100m sprint. I was succeeding into triumph initially but stumble with too much pressure from the audience that ended up with a great fall. I had bruises all over. My left arm has this permanent mark that reminds me of that crazy experience challenging a Kenyan, a prince nonetheless.

Back to Nairobi. Sick of it and literally.
We were back in Nairobi after the three day safari. I got so many things planned but I had to cancel because I caught up with sickness. Its more of exhaustion more than anything else. I stayed at home and recuperated. For our last two days, we visited Westlands. A far more affluent area in Nairobi with all the shops. And of course the Masai Market and bargained hard for souvenirs.

RTW #2: India

1 August 2017

Series of Unfortunate Events
I was laying all the cards in the table and I decided to leave Bangkok airport and spend an hour or two in Bangkok city centre. I do have 6 hour window before my next flight. I already have my boarding pass so I don’t think it is all that risky.

To my horror, the immigration queue was horrendous. I can’t believe I forgot how many tourists visit Bangkok. So an hour out of the window. I am then left with 5 hours (less 45 minutes travel time). I decided I will get a relaxing massage. Then go back to the airport. This should be more than enough so I can relax in the lounge prior to the flight.

But then again, my connnection back to the Airport got f*ckedup. I ended up stranded in Siam for an hour or even more. At 9:30 pm, I still haven’t left Siam. I know that 10:30 pm is the departure time and I needed to board by 9:50 pm. I can’t do anything because even if I take a cab. I would just get stuck at traffic. So I decided to give up and started calling Thai Airways to know my remedies. And of course to ensure I have my luggage with me and not go through to Mumbai.

I arrived 10:29 pm. I can’t be The Flash and speed through the plane within a minute. So I wrote it off and decided to ensure two things happen even before I eat... a. I need to ensure I get my bag and b. I need to ensure I get a flight directly to Delhi. The thing with booking complex itineraries is that one mistake can lead to complete disaster. Domino effect on all the reservations. So I just had to let go of seeing Mumbai. And hope for the best that I will arrive Delhi safe and meet my brother.
To make the long story short. I got my luggage with me and I had booked Spicejet. Not anything related to the Spice Girls but I reckon passengers do love their spices and I hope they don’t perspire too much. Otherwise, I might get my first knockout punch and die of suffocation.

When all things were settled I called my brother and to my horror. So many unfortunate things also happened to him. Oh well, even how hard you plan – some things can still go wrong. He wasn’t able get the car that we hired. So I had to make sure that I will be very mobile when I travel around India. I have 65” luggage with 20kgs to drag along the streets of India. So I had to repack and think of things I will be bringing. I thought of this while stucked in Bangkok so I did buy my backpack and cap (to hide the drenched head –from sweat due to stressing). I ate in a nice japanese restaurant and did my repacking there.

Funny that I brought a lot. Thinking that having a car- I can enjoy the luxury of having so many clothes. But now, such a pity that I can only bring so much. Total disaster but a big adventure lies ahead in discovering why India is indeed Incredible India.

2 August 2017

All efforts to go to India
Spicejet is not so bad! Minus the ignorant ground staff (who says I have an invalid indian visa) all is good. The ignorant girl that I hate so much didn’t even apologies for her mistake. She even dared to ask me, are you sure you haven’t been to India given that you have BKK-BOM boarding pass with you? Far out! I told her the reason I booked Spicejet is obvious because I missed my flight! She so stupid that she can’t even skim through my BP to know that if I indeed went to BOM, then I wouldn’t be here. I would be in a staralliance flight!

And of course, what more can you expect after checking-in. The massive cattle towards Thailand Immigration. Never pick a queue just because it’s short. Study the turnaround and who is the officer processing it. I got stuck in the queue just because officer is oldie and very strict. One hour just to queue and leave BKK. Seems like Thailand wants me on their country and India is like the holy grail. Anyway, sleepless I managed to board Spicejet. 99% were from India. With all the debacle of getting through this flight. Somehow the silver-lining is there and I did come to appreciate the funny ways how their lifestyle works. One, they check-in in packs! Like minimum 5 and can even be 7 or 8. I reckon they do want to maximise their baggage allowance. Poor check-in lady, was shy and calm at first but now she was shouting at them just because they insist to bring the gigantic barbie doll (don’t ask me why – ROFL). Second, I saw a lot of head-shaking rituals. I saw a lot of staring in my direction. They do stare a lot. Finally, everyone is just in a hurry to get in the plane even if their way at the end of the zone in boarding.

I did sleep well due to stress and the good aroma of spices that Spicejet has to offer. But its a good experience as I wake up with the sweltering heat of Delhi and unusual stench that goes through your skin whilst you walk the busy chaotic streets of Delhi.

Delhi at first sight
I learned a lot from my brother’s horrific stories and some blogs I read before to be careful at Airports esp at DEL. So I did my own investigation on the cab prices to the centre. It can be as cheap as 600 rupees or as expensive as 2000 rupees (all in *accdg to them). I said I was waiting for my brother who is picking me up. I know that even thought they say 600INR. I will endup not getting in to my intended destination because they do get commission if they show me to different hotel or to tourist shops. So no thank you guys. I manage to get the cheaper alternative which is the Airport Express. Quick 25 minutes and I am at the New Delhi station. I left my luggage at the airport and paid 400 rupees upfront balance of 1400 rupees when I claim it after 4 days.

The streets of New Delhi is not what I was expecting. So many beggars. Skinny dark people. Toots asking me to ride their rickshaw. And all eyes were on me. I was like a prey in horrid jungle. Soon as I was out of the station I googled my way to the bus. I then realise that instead of riding bus, I will just map it and walk it. As I walk viciously – I saw lots of locals sleeping by the street with dirty torn clothes. Some where gambling. Others were shouting through to their conversation because of the beeping noise everyone (i mean every vehicle makes). The deafening noise made me walk even faster. I spoke to my brother and told him to meet me at Delhi Gate station. And what a relief once I finally saw him. It’s like he did survive a big war and I was just in the middle of it.

It’s just an eye opener but as I am writing this. It’s not too bad. You learn a lot by seeing the worse. Eventually you will get used to it and feel at ease. Because deep down inside, Indian locals are not all bad. The reason they are so aggressive is that because they are in desperate need. I meet a local who did tell me a lot of tips and tricks and I am thankful for her kindness.
Looking for Tou-Bu
Much like the amazing race, this is unforgettable struggle to find Tourist Bureau. For some reasons, they seem to have hidden the location so far from the Metro Railway Station and you have to walk deeper and realise that it does exist. We manage to book all our train tickets throughout our stay in India. Rest a bit and finally wait for the train ride to see the Majestic Taj Mahal.

Ancient Indian Railway Express
The first impression of the train was something I've never anticipated. I did ask myself whether it was indeed First Class. The design was really old nonetheless it is authentic. This is the feeling I was entirely looking forward to. Think 'Slumdog Millionaire' or 'Lion'. When we went to the Tourist Bureau we ensured with get the right mix of First and Economy class. For what's it worth, I enjoyed the latter. For one, I was looking to immerse in the infamous culture. I did learn a thing or two about them. First, there is definitely a caste system I see while waiting for our trains. Second, they are friendly and can be clingy. When you refuse their generosity, you will definitely feel how you have let them down. My brother can attest to this. A young mother offered her sit to me and I took it and was happy initially. But then her daughter was so friendly that I later decided to vacate the seat when the sit next to my brother was finally vacant. I needed some rest to be honest. But she took it really hard. She keeps on talking in Urdu but I don't understand what she was trying to say. Her body language says everything that she was really upset and it made her day worse.

The Majestic Taj Mahal
No words can describe the beauty and magnificence that Shah Jahan has built for Mumtaz Mahal took 22 years and 22,000 workers. It was so tranquil early in the morning to see a glimpse of sun rising in the east. To this day, I am proud of this moment and I am boasting my panoramic shot in my Facebook cover page.

The story as you know was that the Mughal empire during Shah Jahan's time was at its grandeur. He has a lot of women in his life but her one true love is Mumtaz Mahal and in her honour, he built this elaborate mausoleum for her. Eventually he was overthrown and went to prison in Agra Fort. Eventually when he died he was reunited with Mumtaz Mahal at the Taj Mahal and they are together in the other world. True love at its finest, I reckon.

Agra at its best
The best experiences happen in unplanned discovery of the culture. We walked... walked.. and walked. We tried to avoid rickshaw at all cost. We know how they can be a pain to negotiate. But we later realised that if you don't get a private one, it will only cost you 5 rupees instead of the 100 rupees they often charge you just because you are a foreigner. We met lots of locals along the way. From street food, chai maker, ceramic maker. All of them have a story to tell. About their ambition, going to New Delhi and looking for something better. But they do pride themselves living in Agra and meeting people from all over and admiring the Taj Mahal. It can be taboo in other cultures but in India its a mixture of everything. Love defines no boundaries, indeed. We met an old woman selling bracelets and earrings (too ethnic, I reckon) and I thought she was with her son. Later she told us that the guy is her boyfriend (for crying out loud). and we saw two guys holding hands like its their honeymoon. Then later he said that he likes guys. So this was a surprise for me. I originally thought that LGBT community exists mostly in urban world. But this it only validates Lady Gaga's song 'Born This Way'.

Finally, we tried street food that I honestly have a bad memory as to their names, hence I will describe it instead. Their is this egg like thin crunchy (sort of like pork crackles) and once they break the edge they put lots of onion and some spices. Then pour some liquid like vinegar. It tastes like armpit (really!?!). Anyway, what I did enjoy is their Indian burger and a noodle like (Hokkien type) with spices that makes it yellowish. The shocking thing is, they use their bare hands to put in a plate. And to top it all of, we ate it near the sewage for added aroma and distinct smell. It was indeed an experience.

Pink City to complete the Golden Triangle
Anyone visiting India and doing their homework would definitely know the Golden Triangle. It starts with New Delhi going down towards Agra and then moving upwards west to Jaipur. The city is known for the pink city because it literally is coloured Pink as you visit the city centre you will see that the old structure has a touch of pink!

The city is not commonly known especially if you don’t do your research. This is where the film Marigold Hotel 2 was shot. Also, I would have known that this part of India is rich in culture and I would have stayed longer given the handsight.

Normally I would shy away to talk to people around me but since I was travelling with my brother somehow I developed the art of talking. Everyone was really engaging . Soon after I realised I was already playing cricket. This is also where I bought my Majin Bu shirt. The place we walked relentlessly exhausting our energy to find everything that google recommends. Unfortunately we were beaten, the sun came down. But then again, we saw the Albert Museum all lit and what a spectacle it is at night.

Finally this is the place where I realised that we can pass looking like Northern Indian. Apparently we look like we came from the Northwest part of India. At least I can consider learning Urdu next time and pay local prices.

Rahjastan and the Prince of dessert
We officially reached the most exciting part of India: Udaipur and Pushkar.  Not to be so biased about it but this is my favourite part. Not only because Jaipur was too short. Agra was too touristy. Or New Delhi too much of a chaos. Rahjastan is where everything is culturally rich and vibrant. We learnt a thing or two about Hinduism as we met Brahma brothers in the lake overseeing Brahma temple. We got anointed and few prayers were mentioned about our frustrations, healing and our longing and aspirations. It was so enriching that made me pick this specific time and place as a favourite in India.

Another highlight for us is the camel ride into the desert waiting for the sunset. It was such a surprise as we also got a special treat for us, which is to wear the national costume of Rahjastani. It was colourful beaded and elaborate. We look so authentic if only we have our flying carpet!

To end our Indian journey, there was a festival of Brahma and the small city uphill becomes alive. Perhaps too many people at one place consuming huge amount of energy that resulted in so many power outage. We decided to enjoy the company of our co-guests and our host. A lovely chat would always get rid of thinking what better to do than not to sleep if the night is young and its pitch black.

It all turns out well for us in the end and we were able to enjoy our stay in Rahjastan. The elusive traveller in us did enjoy the market and  I tried an authentic Aruvyedic Indian massage too. Chai drinking at its finest. More street food. Brilliant locals that put a lot of spice in our everyday stay in Pushkar. We left very early to catch our train back to Udaipur and to New Delhi given short waiting time but we made it. And we have smiles in our faces thinking about this profound cultural experience that is in Incredible India.

RTW #1: Indonesia

28 July 2017

Arrival in Jakarta
Although I was expecting the heavy traffic, I never realised how bad it really is until I experienced it myself. Imagine 5km/h pacing. It was horrendous. I am hopeful that the government of Indonesia can speed up the airport railway project.

Given that I have a big luggage I had to take the cab. Always take BlueBird, that's my advice.

I arrived safely in my Airbnb somewhere in the South of Jakarta, the place is called Taman Rasuna in Setiabudi. The nieghbourhood is really nice and I'm guessing this is where most of the expats live. It has its own amenties within the building complex ranging from convenience store, ATM, pool, basketball court, gym, and of course short walk to Epiwalk (shopping mall). My host was not in the country when I arrived but has given me adequate information to properly check-in.

Meeting my old friends from E&Y Philippines
When I was still working in Philippines, my batch from E&Y left altogether and moved to Jakarta. I was considering moving here as well. Anyway, after 10+ years we finally got reunited in nice italian restaurant called Trattoria. They are lovely person and very hospitable. They took me under their care and showed me around Jakarta even as far as Taman Safari.

Got reacquanted and shared our own little stories. Eventually after couple of hours we called it a  night and decided to head back home. Luckily I live near their place so it was so convenient for me. Nice 6+ hours sleep and was recharging my batteries for the big event next day.

29 July 2017

Taman Safari, an experience with the wildlings
Woke up as early as 5 am so we can lessen the risk of being held up in traffic. My previous boss accompanied me to Taman Safari. We rented a car and I forgot that I drank coffee and Berocca that I had to hold my bladder for the longest time in traffic. I guess I re-learned that skill once again (having a bad traffic in Manila too).

When we entered Taman Safari, I had to seat in front and pretend to be a local. Do not speak and act nonchalant. I did pass the test. And after all, I do look like one of them. I guess this is the best part of Indonesia trip. A prelude to Safari's if you may (later on my RTW, I am doing the main Kenyan Safari). I saw lots of elephant, camel, giraffe, deer, antlers, lion, tiger, hippo, rhino, you name it. They have all kinds of animals out in the wild forest. And we can feed them carrots. I wonder if this animals never get sick of eating carrots. Seems like they don't really mind. Come to think of it, it makes their eyesight much better. So they don't damage cars, right!

We also did shows of dolphin and tiger. Dolphins are one of the smartest mammals hence they can do maths. Imagine, they can multiply!! Plus they can play sport (like soccer ball to the audience - ROFL). I therefore conclude they are well-rounded mammals.

Finally, due to time constraint we have to pick only one more animal show. I had a choice between cowboy show or tiger show. Of course I had to pick the latter. Cowboys are not animals!! One of the scariest, I reckon. The trainers are so at risk of being eaten alive right in front of the audience. You can see how hungry they are and how often they ask food. If they are not given food, they keep on chasing the trainers. It was so awkward to watch but in the end, they did surivive. In my opinion this should not be part of the park's attraction. Too risky and no real talent for tigers. Maybe its just me.
And for the highlight of my Taman Safari adventure. I manage to be brave enough and sat beside a tiger for about two to five minutes. Taking selfies while under the constant risk of being desert for the tiger. He is from Sumatra and I know they are really tenacious. But I did survive and got my 20k IDR's worth of pics.

We called it a day and took of at around 3ish. Just in time to avoid heavy traffic jam and huge rain poured whilst driving.

Prelude to the Great Malls of Indonesia
Jakarta has the biggest, most glamourous malls. It is so lavish that I can't compare any other cities in Asia, let alone Australia or USA for that matter. Too bad my budget doesn't call for any shopping spree. I can only buy selected souvenirs! By the way the mall is called Plaza something but it has a signage of Galaries Lafayette (from Paris).

Then we went home after feeling the exhaustion.

Go-Everything App
When I arrived home, I searched the web for home massage and I came across go-massage. Apparently the Go-App offers variety of service from shopping, eating, massage and even glam (which I think is make up for the girls). How lazy can you get, huh? Anyway, for 80k IDR it was really cheap and I ended up giving the masseur, 5 stars for taking away the stress of Taman Safari and the Great Mall tour.

Slept very well and ready for another big adventure in-stored for me the next day.

30 July 2017

Indonesia in half a day
I’ve seen all of Indonesia in half a day. How is it possible? Visit Taman Mini and you’ll see the highlights of every main destinations like Sumatra, Papua, Bali, etc. It’s a cultural village much like Philippines’ Nayong Pilipino. My friend Jb and her hubby showed me around. Jacob (their son) was so enthusiastic that helped me forget about the humid day in Jakarta.

Livin’ it like them
The other half of the day was spent much like how they spent their normal Sunday’s.
We went to their one of a kind shopping mall, with good cinema too. Can you believe it they do have beds in the cinema? And they call it Velvet seats.

Went to church after that. That time seems a bit gloomy so we ended up going to Wings Tip (something like that). They do have very tasty wings. Got mine in garlic and parmesan (I think) with super good chips and unlimited drinks. Finally went for bit of grocery shopping just to see what local chocolates and coffee look like. I ended up bringing it back home as souvenirs.

Time to say goodbye
The final day in Jakarta I did it on my own. I went for Go-Jek for the first time. I was damn scared that I might fall or something might hit me. Go-Jek is like your Grab or Uber but its a motorcyle instead. Only downside to it is that sometimes there’s no reception in some areas of Jakarta so you ended up walking until you get data and book your Go-Jek. It’s the best antidote for overcharging tourists!

I’ve seen the old town located in Tua Pua (?). There’s really nothing special here to be honest. I was hoping I can get all the famous sights ticked but I ended up in a dumpster somewhere I don’t even know how I managed to reach by foot. So scary and I don’t know how I survived. Anyway soon as I saw the familiar landmark, I breathed much better and immediately called my next Go-Jek to Manas (?). To my horror Monday is maintenance day. How can I be stupid not to research it before I go, right? Out of frustration, I just ate Mee Goreng and Teh Bohl (?) and called it a day.

The joy of doing nothing
Straightened my things back in the apartment and I did enjoy packing and organising my things. Getting ready for India. Then my Airbnb host messaged me and he wanted to meet me in the apartment. I was having the impression that the reason he wanted to go to the apartment is to check that I haven’t burned the place down. LOL J It ended up to be a good meeting of fellow aviation geek and travel enthusiasts. The conversation went on and on. I was happy that I met someone who shared the same interests as I do, so I ended up giving him the dried mango!

Countdown begins...

50 days to go before my world travel. I can't wait to begin. Although I am still coupled with worries, I know that staying organised will help me put 'a tick' on all the checklist of logistics I need before I begin my journey.

The days are pouring like the weather here in Manila. It often rains even if the monsoon season hasn't started yet. I've been living here in my mum's place for the past 1.5 months and I am happy to be here. Being with family is very nurturing and helps me take away all the worries I have looking ahead. I know that a great deal of ordeal is about to happen when I return back to Sydney. So far so good. I am much better now.

I started to do my first vlog. and I remembered to also update the old-fashioned way ~blog.

Dark ages end.

After all the waiting and living under darkness, finally the spectacle of light appeared.  It created a rainbow and a gleaming pot of gold presented itself.

Now I begin the planning of the journey I was looking forward to.

Off to chase rainbows and butterflies

Admittedly this route I am about to take is what my tagline mentions. Walking with blindfold and figuring out where I am headed to.

I don't know what tomorrow brings though I like the idea of going back home. Back where it all began. My hometown, the Philippines.

I intend to find out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It begins with a complete silence. Reflection. Brainstorming. Unstressed mind without time constraint.

I know that once I reach an idea it will blossom to something special. A place with endless rainbows and butterflies.

Back to basic. Make fantasy come to reality.

See ya later, SYD.

I'm a bit anxious to get back home to Philippines but I know there are a LOT of things to think about. It is not easy going back without a plan especially when I am staying in Manila for the next 5 months. I know clearly that the last thing I want to think about is having to stress about what I want to do with my career when I get back in Sydney in September. One reason for this career break is to reflect on what direction I wanted to choose when I get back. So it seems that I have a lot of time to think this through.

I can't help but wonder about this transition and this journey I am about to embark upon.

Nostalgic to think about people I havr met along the way whilst I was in Sydney. I know they are always on my back and I can lean on them when things get tough.

I hope for the best and I bid Sydney goodbye for now. See ya later, mates!

European Holiday

This is my fourth time to go to Europe. I did not really plan on going as early as March but since my friend Niko is also coming. Then I might as well, so I can save partly on accommodation. The places we stayed, we booked mostly Airbnb with the exception of Paris.

Paris, France
My fifth time in Paris. This is my Tokyo. Or should I say Tokyo is my Paris. They rank as my two best cities I've been that I would always go to whenever I visit Europe or Japan for that matter.

Niko met me at Gare du Nord, patiently waiting for me. We went to get our morning coffee from a local Boulangerie. It was crazy because just short of 500m I can see that there were activists speaking of a safer Paris, how ironic. They started to kick rubbish bins. Quite scary, you know.

Great sights with my close friend, always is the formula for memorable experiences. Pont de Alexandre, Louvre, Notre Dame, Tour Eiffel. We savoured our Michelin meal from Benoit. I can't believe I ate gizzard! For what's it worth, it was quite tasty. Me time at Musee d'Orsay. And finally, shopping at Champs Elysees. Kenzo. L'Occitane. Nothing follows. I was on strict retail diet.

Athens, Greece
Next stop is Athens. Evening stroll at Acropolis. Woke up early for me time at Acropolis museum. Lucky day means no entrance fee to get inside Acropolis and see Parthenon. Then Syntagma square to catch our train to the airport. It was a quick one day stay in the city.

Vienna, Austria
I said see you later to Niko and we meet in Italy. I flew my Aegean business to Vienna. Nice city. I booked BMW for my grand entrance to Hotel Bristol. Then straight to Vienna State Opera to see Don Giovanni. It was well entertaining. The highlight is the majestic fascade! I returned to Hotel Bristol to my surprise I was upgraded to the Opera view room.

Vienna for the next day means going to Hofburg. Trying on Apple Strudel. Hearing mass at St Stephen Church. Eating Snitzel. Watching classical music of Schubert and Mozart at Schonbrunn Palace.

Salzburg, Austria
I stayed in Ramada Hotel just to literally run to my Sound of Music tour. It was raining that time. But it did add a layer of drama while the driver played 16 going on 17. It was a good tour. I love seeing the Leopoldskron Palace where they shoot the movie. It is not the original house of the Von Trappe family but this is where they shot it.

We then went to Monsee and it was a lovely town. The church where Maria and Georg's wedding. The whole place is just good, though I was freezing. I took the opportunity to get to know the small town by foot.

Zurich, Switzerland
In Zurich it rained so bad. I met with Jamie, my workmate from Philippines, who now resides in Liechtenstein. She is fluent in German and it comes handy. The next day I went around Zurich under the pouring rain. I walked and admired the beautiful architecture around. I was also in search of souvenir like Swiss knife and chocolates.

Luzern, Switzerland
Jamie's hospitality was unparalleled, she paid for my return train ride to Luzern among many other treats. I find so much beauty in Luzern especially the lake and how there are many ducks everywhere I look. Finally, we had a chance to try Fondue, a huge pot of melted cheese with truffles. It was our dinner. And I never realise how it can make you full. Pieces of bread and steamed baby potatoes dipped in a luscious pool of cheese. Wash away with wine. That's what I call a treat.

Milan, Italy
The travel to Milan from Zurich was scenic too but nothing beats Salzburg to Zurich. You can see endless array of trees painted with vast snow. It felt like Christmas and I did feel hint of loneliness as I see such beauty by myself. So I decided to turn my Facebook live and do the most overrated thing I can fathom.

Milan's charm is not just because there is a grand cathedral, Duomo nor because of the posh shops in the beautiful Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. But because of the walking fashionista and that the thought that we are in Italy. The land of leather goods, gelato, cappucino and pizza/pasta.

I met with Niko at Milano Centrale and we immediately went for a massive pizza slices. We enjoyed every moment in Milano. We bought wine and antipasto for our midnight bonding. Recount our European adventure.

The next day we went to Duomo and climbed unbelievable flight of stairs until my lungs almost exploded. The view was so good and we just escaped in our own little meditating until sunset. We met with a common friend, Melo. He was there when I impulsively bought my orange-infused Louis Vuitton District bag. We went for drinks and apparently the food is free. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Anyway, we ended it with a gelato and called it a night.

Europe has something to offer. A pleasant surprise. May it be your first time or in my case my fourth. I never ran out of cities to visit. And I am not half way finished. I savour the culture each country has to offer and the beauty of history that is embedded in every building you see. There's always something more..

Goodbye, AMT.

After four years and four months of working with AMT, I finally received the much awaited letter. I was following it up for weeks. I couldn't go to Europe not knowing what will happen to my job and the certainty of the severance pay.

But come to think of it, I have really come to love not only the work but the people I worked with. The team we built and the culture we developed is priceless. I have molded my team into responsible people who strives in reaching their aspirations.

It did not worry me if I leave. I know that I can pass on the torch to my well trusted assistant.

I would definitely miss the perks of working with AMT. Phone at cost. Getting first hand knowledge of Samsung deals. Going to concerts in the Corporate Box in Olympic Park. Most of all, the flexibility of working. Me going to the Philippines for business. And I always get the vacation leave I wanted.

But seriously, thank you AMT. My growth was exponential because of you.

2016 missing

There is this huge cloud over 2016 for me. I know I have not blogged for the whole year. But now I have finally moved on...

Losing my father last year was a big heartache. Living in another country, another continent makes it unbearable. I tend to look for something that will divert the thoughts temporarily.

Now I am ready to put them in writing. He was one of the great pillars in my life that I look up to. The person who is very considerate and appreciate the little efforts I put through back when I was young. Actually both my parents are the best parents anyone can wish for. Very ideal and they brought me up quite well and I am proud of that.

The day I learnt about my father's passing, was when I was with my older brother after he picked me up from NAIA. The emotions were not visible but in my heart it was in unimaginable pain. I let go of all the walls that I built to protect my composure and I hugged a friend. I started crying. But deep inside, I know that he is in a much better place and he would like us to move on and get on with our lives.

Throughout the year, I was doing my best at work. Trying to do what I like most. I am not bounded by traditions so I went on for holidays to Melbourne, New Zealand, Japan, Thailand and back to Philippines pre-Christmas. I learnt that my avenue for sorrow still belongs to travelling.

When I travel I go to a different mindset. A place where I venture the unexpected. Learn of other cultures. Appreciate the arts. See how other people in other countries live their life. And discover my thirst to explore something new.

Though I missed 366 days worth of entries on this blog, I know that I can encapsulate everything in one notion. That is, I learnt how to let go and I took baby steps to moving on.
